Sasan Gir

Sasan Gir or Gir National Park is a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, west of India. This national park covers 1412 sq. km of area and was built to protect & preserve the Asian lions along with the leopards and antelopes who are mostly fenced off the Devalia safari park.

The Nawab of Junagadh began the preservation of these lions when they had entered the extinction phase of hunting. Later in 2010, the official count said was just 411 lions. Today you may see nearly 600 lions in the forest.

This national park is also a home for Leopards, Chausinghas, Spotted Deers, Hyenas, Sambar Deers, Chinkaras and other important forms of wildlife. Here there are nearly 2375 faunal habitats including 38 mammal species, more than 300 bird species, 37 reptile species and over 2000 insect species.

One may take a thrilling yet enjoyable jeep safari to explore the dense forest with a large number of lions in this area. The excitement is not over; this place is an excellent location to spot the rare bird species. A lot of migrating birds come to India, including Pygmy Woodpecker, Woodpecker’s Flamingo, Bonneli’s Eagle; one can grab the opportunity to go on bird-watching activities.

How to reach Sasan Gir?

By Air: Keshod Airport, which is almost 70 km north, is the closest airport to Gir National Park. The other airport is in Rajkot, about 160 km north. Best is to take a flight from Mumbai to Diu airport. There are also many helicopter ride from Mumbai to Diu or Daman to Diu.

By Train: Nearest train station is Maliya Hatina. Regular trains to Sasan Gir from other major cities are not available. Hence, best thing is to take a train route up to Junagadh or Ahmedabad.

By Road: The place is very close to Diu, Rajkot and Porbandar these places are well connected with major national highways in Gujarat.

Best time to visit Sasan Gir

Every year from mid-June and mid-October, the protected area of Gir National Park is closed. It is the time when monsoon arrives in the southwest region.

In fact, December to March is the best season to visit the park. Although, it is very warm in April and May.
