Ajanta Ellora caves – Along the Waghur River, about 105 km northeast of Aurangabad in Maharashtra Ajanta the ancient cave temples are located. It is carved into the steep rock horseshoe shape and one of the longest surviving examples of Indian art. Ellora caves are much older than the Ajanta caves; it is the chain of 34 rock-cut Buddhist, Hindus and Jain monuments. Ajanta and Ellora caves are also UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The most famous attraction of Ajanta and Ellora caves is the Kailash temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The 16th cave is the largest single rock excavation in the world. More importantly, the temple is attributed to Rashtrakuta king Krishna. Besides, the Kailash temple is an important pilgrimage spot for Hindus.

It is believed that Lord Buddha seated on a lion in cave two. The cave 2 contains 12 ornate square pillars and has carvings on Maitreya Buddha and Padmavati.
